We are seeking a Medical Officer for an interesting and challenging positon in a small South Otago Hospital. The role is a fixed term contract for one year.
The three Medical Officers in the hospital enjoy close working relationships with patients and the support of a well-established team of experienced nurses. Support and advice is also available from the sub-specialty services operating out of a larger hospital in Dunedin, and regular visits from a medical specialist.
The hospital operates a fifteen bed inpatient medical ward, and three bed rural primary maternity ward. A wide range of community services also operate out of the hospital including District Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Needs Assessment and Social Work services. There is community physiotherapy, community laboratory and a radiology department providing plain x-ray and ultrasound diagnostics onsite.
The hospital is a rural teaching centre for the University of Otago Rural Medical Immersion Programme.
The Medical Officer is responsible for the medical care of admitted patients and is the sole rostered doctor responsible for all activities related to the patient, including admission, discharge, medical assessment, medication prescribing, diagnostics etc.
You will provide medical services for general medical, minor surgical, -assessment and observation, AT&R (assessment, treatment and rehabilitation) inpatients, AT&R day patients and emergency patients.
The ideal candidate will have experience with general medicine patients and involvement in some emergency presentations, as well as experience working in General Practice.
Balclutha is a friendly rural community of approximately 17, 000 people. Balclutha is on the doorstep to the Catlins coastline, with beautiful beaches within 20 minutes’ drive.
If you prefer to go inland, in just over two hours’ drive you will reach Otago (Queenstown and Wanaka) where there are wineries, beautiful lakes for water sports in the summer and mountains for skiing in the winter.
