About the College

The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners is the professional body which provides training and ongoing professional development for general practitioners and rural hospital generalists, and sets standards for general practice.

The College delivers:

  • standard-setting and quality systems and processes for general practitioners and general practice
  • continuing professional development for general practitioners and rural hospital doctors
  • leadership in general practice quality and advocacy, as well as research on general practice for its membership and stakeholders.
  • vocational training for general practitioners in New Zealand

We have created a Training Unit to separate the standard-setting function of the College from the training function and avoid any potential conflicts of interest.

This and other changes we have made in 2011/12 are aimed at making the College more agile and responsive to a changing primary care environment.

These all contribute to the College's overall goal to improve the health of New Zealanders through high quality general practice care.

The College is governed by an Executive Board and managed by a Chief Executive Officer and a Senior Management Team. An Advisory Council provides input from members into the strategic direction of the College.
