The Teacher: Jonathan Morton

I grew up in South Africa and studied medicine at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.  From there I began work in a large general hospital in the Midlands of Natal-Kwazylu.  After working in various clinical departments I commenced work as a GP until 1995 when my family and I decided to immigrate to New Zealand.  Here I have worked in a large general practice until late 2008 when I took over the practice of the late Dr Graham Adler.

My interests lie within the remit of teaching, medical history, prevention of disease by risk reduction, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and primary care as a whole.  It is true that it is better to give than to receive and I have been given much.  I now take real pleasure in passing on insights and information, and seeing a student progress.  It is one way I can help patients indirectly and so assist in reducing the total burden of disease.

My teaching experience goes back to my early post graduate days when I had the privilege of teaching anatomy to nurses, and emergency procedures to game rangers.  Since then I have spoken at meetings on a range of topics and have had the thrill of working with several trainee Interns.

The Practice

Central City Medical came into existence in November 2008 after the sudden and unexpected death of the previous sole practitioner.  It is the Practice of Dr Jonathan Morton, Dr. Paul Jip, Mrs Kate Morton (Nurse Practitioner) and Mrs Aishah Jip (Practice Manager).  The infrastructure of the inherited practice needed radical modernisation and led not only to a change in practitioners, but also in refurbishment, computerisation and business organisation. The practice expanded at an exponential rate, with the enrolled population growing from 400 to 3000 within a year. The practice population is currently standing at 4000 patients.  We provide family orientated general practice and aim to manage our patients with the expectation that we will enter into a stable professional relationship with them and their family for the long-term.

In June 2011 the practice achieved Cornerstone Accreditation and a commendable ‘pass on the day’

Each group has unique and distinct profiles in sickness, presentation, health expectations, position in society and financial means.

Children under six are fully publically funded meaning they do not pay to see a doctor at our practice.

Recent utilization Data i.e. how often we see patients from funding categories A1, A3,AZ,J1, J3, JZ,Yi,Y3,YZ show a trend of GP consultations for patients who own a community services card.
