As Chief Executive of the College, Karen Thomas has responsibilities for strategic and operational management, advocacy, policy development, communications and liaison. A trained clinical psychologist, the mother of two has held senior management positions in the New Zealand public service, starting with the Probation Service, the State Services Commission – where she worked on the establishment of the Australia New Zealand School of Government - and as Manager, Government Services with Child, Youth and Family.
Since her appointment, she has worked to restructure the College into a more effective and supportive organisation for the GPs of today.
Outside the College she retains a keen interest in the work of the American Field Scholars programme, of which she is a board member and the deputy chair. She is currently a director of the Rotary Club of Wellington.
