Getting the most from your GP

The more open you are with your family doctor the more your doctor will understand your concerns. It may help to make a note of your concerns before you visit your GP.

Here are some ideas to help you get the best out of your visit:

  • You can take someone with you for support
  • Tell your story
  • Say if you are using any herbal treatments, vitamins or any other medicine
  • If you have worries about costs discuss them with your doctor
  • Check how and when you will get your test results
  • You can ask for information to be written down

Remember, getting the best out of your visit with your family doctor improves your care, and having a regular doctor improves your long term care.

If you do have to visit another family doctor you can ask for a record of your visit.

The Consumer Liaison Committee advises that to ensure you receive the best possible services, you check that your GP is registered with the Medical Council (www.mcnz.org.nz) and that the general practice has Cornerstone accreditation (www.rnzcgp.org.nz/accredited-practices/).
