Fellowship

Fellowship (the recognised postgraduate qualification for general practitioners in New Zealand), is awarded after successful completion of the two stages of the General Practice Education Programme.

GP

General Practitioner. A general practitioner is an appropriately qualified medical graduate who has particular knowledge and skills to provide personal, family, whanau and community-oriented, comprehensive primary care. A GPs care continues over time, is anticipatory as well as responsive, and is not limited by the age, sex, race, religion, or social circumstances of patients, nor by their physical or mental states.

GPEP Clinical Leader

The general practitioner employed by the College to manage the clinical aspects of the Programme.

GPEP1

General Practice Education Programme – Stage 1. This is the entry point on the Pathway to Fellowship.

GPEP2

Stage 2 is undertaken after successful completion of GPEP 1 and Primex.

Primary Membership Examination. This examination is undertaken after completion of GPEP1. Registrars become Members of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (MRNZCGP) (use of the title expires after 5 years if GPEP2 has not been completed.

The person employed by the College to administer the programme.

Registrar

Term used for doctors undertaking GPEP1.

Registrar (employed)

A medical practitioner who entered into a contractual relationship with an approved practice prior to applying for a position on the Programme or is employed by a DHB taking part in a DHB training programme.

Registrar (funded)

A medical practitioner who is appointed by the College as a registrar in the Programme and who receives a training bursary funded by the Clinical Training Agency.

Scope of Practice

Refers to what a health practitioner is authorised to perform under section 21 of the HPCA Act, subject to any conditions imposed by the authority responsible for the registration of the profession.
