Policy

Policy is responsible for GP representation and Research.

The GP representation programme ensures that the views and interests of general practitioners are reflected in College policy positions, represented and advocated within Government and at forums within the wider health sector, and also arranging College representation on statutory bodies and working groups.

The College’s Research Fellow within Policy works to provide the evidence base to assist decision making by GPs and by the College, and to inform the work we do to influence government and sector bodies making decisions which impact on clinical care, general practitioners and general practice.

Policy also provides the secretariat for the Consumer Liaison Committee and for the Ad Hoc Appointments Committee of the Executive. The Directorate is also responsible for the Review of the Constitution, working with a Steering Group appointed by Council.

Advocating the GP View

The College seeks to ensure the GP voice is heard through:

  • Nomination of College Fellows to national committee such as the Diabetes and Cardiovascular Guideline Development Group
  • Monitoring changes in the health sector and assessing their impact on general practice through consultations and discussions with College members.
  • Collecting feedback from members to prepare submissions, reports and presentations to key groups such as the Ministry of Health, ACC and PHARMAC.
