Professional development is not just about updating technical competency, it is about constantly reflecting on and renewing the capacity to make professional judgements. It is important to build professional development into practice. Professional development should be planned and relevant – it should take into consideration individual professional development needs, requirements of an individual’s practice, and personal ambitions and goals.
A Professional Development Plan enables you to identify and concentrate on the things that will be of most benefit to you and your practice. It enables you to avoid sessions that may not meet your needs. It is useful in targeting which professional development activities will be of most use – what CME events to attend, what CQI activity to undertake – and ensure sessions further develop your competencies and help you to reflect on your practice.
