Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Provides an acknowledgement of prior learning resulting from previous study, work or other relevant experiences to determine your pathway to Fellowship.

New entrants into general practice

To gain sufficient knowledge and experience and be eligible to sit the RNZCGP Primex examination, new entrants to New Zealand general practice (i.e. those with minimal or no experience in New Zealand general practice) will need to:

  • Enrol in either the GPEP1 intensive clinical training programme - or
  • Enrol in the GPEP1 seminar programme option - or
  • Apply to the Board of Assessment for an exemption from stage one vocational education where the candidate considers they have completed general practice vocational education equivalent to GPEP1 and are seeking recognition of their prior learning.

Experienced general practitioners

General practitioners with experience in New Zealand general practice (ie a minimum of 6 months full-time equivalent in general practice) may be granted by the Board of Assessment an exemption from stage one vocational education where the candidate considers they have completed general practice vocational education equivalent to GPEP1 and are seeking recognition of their prior learning.
