Resuscitation Skills

Resuscitation Skills Training for General Practice

The College considers it is important that all GPs are proficient in resuscitation.

A pass in a New Zealand Resuscitation Council CORE course at Level 5 is required in order to achieve FRNZCGP.

A certificate of participation in a course which meets the New Zealand standards for resuscitation at level 5 or above, and is offered through a CORE or equivalent RNZCGP endorsed provider, is required every triennium for doctors registered in the College Maintenance of Professional Standards (MOPS) programme.

In the MOPS 2011 – 2013 triennium:

  • NZRC Level 5 Courses will be endorsed by the RNZCGP for 8 CME Credits
  • NZRC Level 7 Courses will be endorsed by the RNZCGP for 12 CME Credits

The College has set the minimum requirement at NZRC Level 5 for MOPS participants but encourages GPs to train to the level appropriate to their work situation.

The course content must include, at a minimum,

  • Adult collapse management skills
  • Childhood collapse management skills
  • Airway management skills
  • Team management for adult collapse
  • Team management for childhood collapse

(Team management for medical illness and trauma skills are optional components)

Certificates issued by resuscitation skills training providers must contain the following information:

  • The length of the course in hours
  • A statement that acknowledges successful participation and/or assessment at the relevant level
  • List of skills taught
  • The phrase 'A RNZCGP Approved Resuscitation Skills Provider'
  • Date of issue
