Royal NZ College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) President Dr Harry Pert congratulated Mr Ryall on his return as Minister of Health. “I’m pleased with the re-appointment, pleased that there is stability and consistency, which the sector needs, and pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment he brings to the portfolio.”

Dr Pert acknowledged the previous support from the Minister and was keen to address the challenges ahead.  “We want to make quality of greater importance in general practice - it is currently not sufficiently required or rewarded.  We need to ensure general practice services remain of a high standard, and then raise them even further.  We believe every GP should be vocationally trained in their job and look for political support to back this.”

Dr Pert said that the College will look to the Minister for his continued endorsement in improving the general practice workforce and maintaining the number of people coming into it through the College’s training programmes.  “We also look to continue discussions with the Minister about how we reduce barriers to access to health services for at risk individuals and communities.”
