The Principal Teacher: Dr John Clark

John has been in general practice for 34 years and has been involved in teaching students and registrars from the outset. He is also involved in an international teaching programme promoting sexual health and healthy family lifestyles. Over the years, he has taken younger doctors into his practice and mentored them encouraging them to become the best doctors they can be. His special interests include minor surgery (including injection sclerotherapy for varicose veins), mental health challenges and travel health. His aim has always been to address the needs of the whole person – physical, mental, spiritual as well as in the area of relationships.

The Practice

The Tamaki Family Health Centre was started by Dr Clark in 1986 to express his particular concern for the delivery of wholistic care. It has grown over the years and has now approx 5000 registered patients. It is linked with the largest Maori-based PHO in Auckland (Te Hononga O Tamaki Me Hoturoa).

It is classified as a ‘very low cost’ clinic and so is able to offer high quality care for low patient fees. This allows to care for the poorest of Auckland’s populations as well as many refugees and migrants.

We have been re-accredited via Cornerstone this year and have a wide range of services in the practice. These include general counselling, physiotherapy, smoking cessation and nutrition advice plus minor surgery, injection sclerotherapy for varicose veins and travel health (we are a fully accredited Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre).

Our clinic employs 5 other doctors (all women doctors) who work between 8/10ths and 2/10ths pr week.

They are Dr Adrienne Mills, Dr Julie Guy, Dr Tracey Robinson, Dr Gabrielle Moss and Dr Mei Ling Lee.

We also have a complement of 5 practice nurses – Lucita Villaflores (nursing manager), Mary Clark, Mary Goldfinch, Raksha Ramos, Likha Santos and Cathy Maraya.

These are aided by reception and admin staff.

The PMS is MedTech 32 (vs 19.4) and we have full broadband facilities. The clinic is open from 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday and we also run an ‘urgent-only’ clinic from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. The clinic has 5 dedicated doctor’s consulting rooms plus 2 nurses treatment rooms. With a maximum of 3 doctors on deck at one time, there will be space for a GP registrar.

After hours cover is provided for the local White Cross Clinic but there will be opportunities for the registrar to be involved in monthly Sat morning clinics plus house calls when they arise. The clinic does not have any rest home contracts.
