Taupo Medical Centre is a busy semi-rural practice of seven full time equivalent doctors situated in the central North Island town of Taupo. We have siz full time male doctors (8-9/10) and two part time female doctors (5/10). Their combined registered patient base is approximately 14000 patients. As Taupo is a popular tourist destination we also see a large number of casual patients, especially over the summer months.
Our practice is situated about five minutes walk from the centre of town and we share our premises with fellow medical tenants including pharmacy, laboratory and orthopaedic surgeon. We also have Xray services in the building next door. Taupo has a 24 hour ambulance service and Taupo hospital is about 5 minutes drive from the practice.
We use Medtech Practice Management System. Each doctor has a template for the day. Some doctors have 10 minute appointments, others have 15 minute appointments. We also have a nurses list to put patients on. Each doctor has spots available for urgent cases. We also have an admin nurse who fields calls from reception and will book apointments if necessary.
We offer 24 hour care to our patients and the after hours duty (week night and weekend) is rostered together with the other doctors in Taupo (a total of 15 full time equivalents). Each doctor is rostered to work approximately one week night per three weeks and at most one weekend per month. When on week night duty we keep the surgery open until 8:00pm with a nurse rostered to assist the duty doctor. For weekend duties one nurse and one receptionist are rostered on each day. From 10:00pm to 8:00am the following day Taupo Hospital sees all after hours patients except where rest home visits are required.
Resthome visits, palliative care visits and minor surgery are conducted during normal working hours unless there is an emergency visit required.
