Ko Mauao te Maunga
Ko Tauranga te Moana
Ko Takitimu te Waka
Ko Ngati Ranginui te Iwi
Ko Ngati Hangarau te Hapu

I grew up in Te Puke, and through my mothers family come from Hangarau, Tauranga. My father's family are 5th generation of French decent.

I have always been interested in teaching from a medical student, house surgeon through to now as a GP. A big part of this interest in teaching is actually to become a better practitioner. I find that reviewing cases, going through why you have done things in a particular way, asking questions of both myself and colleagues will undoubtedly improve myself as a clinician.

As a GP I have had a number of undergraduate students including 4th 5th TI and overseas elective students come through this practice.I am on the PHO clinical committee and also involved with a Care pathway initiative (Bay Navigator) which is a primary secondary interface service being developed.

Unrelated to GP work I have also coached my children's sprts team and am involved in Surf Life Saving, enjoy fishing, rugby, reading and time with my family.

The Practice

Te Whare o Ngati Kahu Hauora is not for profit society which runs a GP service, alcohol and drug counselling service, whanau ora service and a respite facility which accommodates up to three clients at a time. We are based in Bethlehem, on the outskirts of Tauranga.

Ngati Kahu GP service - a CORNERSTONE accredited practice, part of the Western Bay PHO. We are a high needs practice and try to have as low a fees as possible. A very high proportion of our patient population are Maori, the rest are made up of pakeha, and a small percentage of other ethnicities. Although, as described by a GP assessor, we have 'modest building/facility' we strive to provide a high quality service to our patient population. Part of our services involves working in satellite clinics of which we have three. These run out of other individual Hauora, Matakana Island Hauora, Matapihi and Motiti Island Hauora. Matakana and Matapihi clinics are weekly and Motiti is run once a month. The patients at these clinics are almost exclusively Maori.

We use Med Tech as our patient management system and have an adequate broadband internet service. The practice is going through a development phase and in the next few months will increase the size from having three clinical consulting rooms to having six. This is envisioned to be completed by the middle of the year. We do currently have a spare consulting room which can/will be used for registrars.

Other staff at the practice include two main GPs, two receptionists, GP practice manager, and two practice nurses who job share.

We have special interest in high needs medicine and chronic conditions having a lot of diabetics, IHD, asthma, and skin problems such as impetigo. I do perform minor surgery and Dr Isham has an interest in family planning and women's health.

Registrar Timetable

This can be individualised to suit both the practice and registrar. We can accommodate a registrar Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with the seminar course being on Wednesdays. Some of the time this may include working in our satellite clinic. After hours is minimal, approximately one session every month.
