Hosted by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (the College), which is the professional body and postgraduate educational institute for general practitioners (GPs) and rural hospital doctors. 

Find out more about our General Practice Education Programme (GPEP), which is the three-year post-graduate pathway to a specialist career as a general practitioner, that qualifies you to practice independently in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Speakers

 

Dr Bryan Betty – RNZCGP Medical Director  
Dr Betty is a Distinguished Fellow and Wellington based GP, who has practiced for the past 15 years at Porirua Union and Community Health Service in Cannons Creek. Dr Betty was recently made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the 2022 late Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday Honours for his services to the profession. With a largely Māori and Pacific population, and high number of refugees, around 90 per cent of his patients have complex health needs. Equity, and issues such as access to quality healthcare for everyone, have been strong motivators throughout his career. During the heat of the global pandemic, Dr Betty was the calm and collected voice of the COVID-19 response team and an advisor on the government’s COVID-19 response committee.   


Dr Vanisi Prescott – RNZCGP Fellow 
Dr Prescott is a GP and a Fellow in Urgent Care based in Auckland. She is a member of the College’s Pacific and GP Registrar Chapters and currently works at Stoddard Road Medical centre, a Highschool and an Urgent Care practice. She has a special interest in Youth Health with a passion for helping her Pacific community. She regularly gets involved in a number of outreach events within her community and utilizes her social media platforms to help advocate, empower and educate people. Vanisi is also currently presenting on a medical TV series called The Checkup.  


Dr Mamaeroa David – RNZCGP GP Registrar 
Dr David graduated from Auckland Medical School in 2005 and initially trained in Paediatrics, however after the birth of her second child was given the opportunity experience working in general practice, and never looked back. Now in her third year of GPEP training, practicing as a GP made Dr David appreciate the ‘bigger picture view’ the profession affords her to follow her passion of caring for Tamariki and how this works in direct correlation of improving the wellbeing of their Whanau and the wider communities they live in. 


Dr Melissa Austen – RNZCGP GP Registrar  
Dr Austen is a third year GP trainee based in Wellington. She works at both Karori Medical Centre and The 502 Rangatahi Ora Health Service; a non-profit, free healthcare service for high-needs rangatahi based in Porirua.  


Dr Stephen Lillis – RNZCGP Fellow and Clinical Lead
Dr Lillis is a Hamilton based GP and Clinical Lead for the College’s GPEP programme. He currently works at Waikato University Student Health as well as an Honorary Senior Lecturer for general practice and primary health care at the University of Auckland.
