Paediatric allergy
CME workshop to review evidence in food allergy prevention and treatment.
Dr Karen Hoare will be facilitating this seminar and Drs Diana Purvis and Jan Sinclair will be presenting.

The purpose of this workshop is to review the latest evidence in food allergy prevention and treatment. This will include practical information regarding introduction of foods, allergy testing and proactive management of eczema, aiming to minimise the incidence and impact of food allergy in New Zealand children.

The incidence of food allergy has increased in the last 30 years, with reasons for this as yet unclear. Management of established food allergy remains avoidance of specific foods. However recent evidence showing that establishing early oral tolerance of commonly allergenic food may reduce the chance of developing food allergy. Proactive treatment of eczema in infants may further help to prevent food allergy. New research results have led to a paradigm shift in our approach to allergy prevention.
Audience: This workshop is most relevant to health practitioners with a role in education who will be able to disseminate updated information to wider groups of professionals. Specialty areas may include primary care (general practice, nursing) midwifery, Plunket and well-child workers.
