The Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme (RHMTP)
The Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme (RHMTP) is how doctors study to become a Fellow of The Division of Rural Hospital Medicine and qualify to practise as a rural hospital doctor. It is a four-year full-time equivalent (FTE) course of study, but there are also part-time options available.
The RHMTP is flexible, and registrars can look for clinical placements and training options that suit their lives and interests.
How you will learn
Your learning will mainly happen in hospitals and general practices as you complete the required clinical attachments. These are a mix of compulsory and elective attachments that take a minimum of four years full-time work to finish.
You will spend at least 12 months of your clinical attachments in two different rural hospitals.
Your learning will also be supported and led by:
- your Educational Facilitator
- the rotational supervisor for each of your attachments
- the clinical leaders for the RHMTP
- your peers
- the College’s Senior Education Coordinator.
You will take part in:
- academic study through the University of Otago
- practice-based assessments
- conferences and training activities
- Te Ara, a dedicated online learning platform, with online modules and discussion forums
- assessment by medical colleagues, administrators, and patients.
Enrolment dates
Enrolment for the next intake of students will open in February and close in April.
