Dr Lauren McGifford re-elected to Board

College News
27 April 2018

In accordance with the Rules of the College, voting closed on 24 April 2018 for the vacancy on the Board.

The result of the ballot was as follows:

  • Dr Chandra Jayaraman – 256 votes
  • Dr Lauren McGifford – 501 votes
  • Dr Stephanie Taylor – 442 votes

We therefore announce that Dr Lauren McGifford is re-elected to the College's Board for another three-year term.

Dr Lauren McGifford said:

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to continue on the Board for a further term and would like to thank the members for their support, and the two other candidates for their willingness to serve the membership.

"On joining the Board three years ago I sought to enhance communication and mutual understanding between the College and its members and registrars involved in the education programme. Over the coming term my hope is that all members will have a greater sense of engagement with our College as we move forward into exciting times ahead for our profession."

College President Tim Malloy said:

"I'd like to congratulate Lauren on her re-election to the Board, and also send my thanks to both Stephanie and Chandra.

"Lauren has already made a significant contribution to general practice in New Zealand, as an experienced GP, a medical educator and more recently as a Board member serving on key committees for the College. I look forward to continuing working with her."

Further information

When does Dr McGifford take office?

Dr McGifford’s current Board term (her first term) ends at the conclusion of this year’s Annual General Meeting on 28 July 2018, at which time she will immediately begin her second term of office.

How many times can a Board member be re-elected or appointed?

A Board member can be elected or appointed for two consecutive terms. However, the Rules of the College state that at the conclusion of the second term of office, the Board member cannot be re-elected or reappointed until the third AGM after the AGM at which they end their second term of office (or in simple terms, a three year break from the Board).

What if they want to stand for President?

Recently retired Board members may stand in the election for President without a three AGM stand down, provided they are Fellows of the College.
