GP17: Conference wrap up!

College news

Around 500 College members gathered in Dunedin last weekend to attend the annual Conference for General Practice.  It was a busy three days, with an abundance of learning opportunities on a wide range of topics.  In total 99 presenters spoke during 57 sessions, including insightful discussions on obesity, technology and multi-morbidity led by our international keynote speakers.

The themes covered in the concurrent sessions included health equity and rural issues, clinical and practical guidance, as well as sector and workforce updates. While Dr Sam Hazledine’s pre-conference self-care workshop had delegates doing star jumps, Dr Lucy O’Hagan’s session on burn-out them in tears.  The ‘university challenge’ session also provided a valuable opportunity for Professors Neil Quigley of Waikato University and Peter Crampton from University of Otago to outline their plans for training more rural GPs.

The Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman spoke on the first day and acknowledged delegates’ contribution to the health system and New Zealand society as a whole.  He thanked members for sharing their concerns via the College’s digital postcard campaign, and said he had shared these with Prime Minister Bill English.

The conference included several celebrations of members’ success, such as Dr Garry Nixon being presented with the Eric Elder Memorial Award for his contribution to rural medicine.  On Saturday night the College awarded one Distinguished Service Award, two Community Service Awards, and 11 Distinguished Fellowships – including the first ever Distinguished Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine which went to Dr James Reid. See the full list of 2017 award recipients.

Forty five of our 149 new Fellows attended our Fellowship ceremony and received their Fellowship certificate from President Tim Malloy.  It was very special to see them celebrate with their families and colleagues at the Dunedin Art Centre after the ceremony.

The College’s annual general meeting was held on Saturday 29 July 2017.
