Last Friday we sent out the exam results to the 226 candidates who sat our GP Education Programme exams at the end of 2017.

The exams are a significant milestone of our vocational training, and the candidates, their medical educators and teachers all put a lot of effort into preparing for them.

In total, 192 candidates did both the clinical and written exam, while 17 candidates did either the written or clinical exam only.

The clinical exam, which was held in Wellington in November 2017, comprised 10 simulated clinical examination cases. The written exam, held in December 2017, involved two written papers of three hours duration each.

Overall the results were very pleasing. The pass rate for the clinical exam was 84.7% and the pass rate for the written exam was 91.4%.

College Chief Executive Helen Morgan-Banda says she was delighted so many GPEP registrars successfully passed their exams and are now able to progress through to the next stage of their GP training.

“As with any exam, there is pressure to do well and we recognise that our candidates put a lot of work into their study and exam preparation,” says Helen.

“We hope they’ll all be very pleased with their results. From the College’s point of view, it’s reassuring to know we have another committed cohort of trainee GPs on the journey towards vocational registration in general practice. With a GP shortage looming, this is very good news indeed,” she says.

“The College will be working with the registrars who didn’t pass, providing support and guidance to help them with another attempt.”
