Vaccine after COVID-19 infection

Published 1 April 2022

The Ministry have updated their guidance around COVID-19 vaccination after COVID-19 infection.

The updated guidance recommends people who have had COVID-19 wait three months after testing positive before getting any COVID-19 vaccine. This recommendation is for all ages and applies to all COVID-19 vaccines available in New Zealand.

  • Clinical discretion can be applied when considering vaccination prior to 3 months after infection.
  • Vaccination prior to 3 months after infection may be appropriate for those individuals considered to be at high risk of severe disease from COVID-19 re-infection.
  • The 3-month interval should only be shortened for 5-17-year-olds in exceptional circumstances, where risk of COVID-19 is clinically determined to outweigh the risk of an earlier vaccination. This is because they have a good immune response to vaccines, and there is less data on vaccination after infection in children and adolescents.
  • Refer to the Immunisation Handbook for further information.
  • Appointments to discuss COVID-19 vaccination timing are free for the consumer. This can be claimed in the same way other costs for COVID-19 appointments are claimed for.
