Tongan Health Society wins GP practice of the year

12 June 2020

Earlier this year, Auckland’s Tongan Health Society was awarded GP practice of the year at the inaugural Primary Healthcare Awards.

College Fellow Dr Glenn Doherty and his team were recognised for their inspirational package of health and community care, which they’re achieving through a holistic, evidence-based approach that is rooted centred on equity. The judges commented that Tongan Health Society was, “a unique general practice model of care that includes clinical and non-clinical input for a high needs, vulnerable population of largely Tongan clients.”

Tongan Health Society really walks the talk with a bilingual pre-school staffed by Tongan teachers, a community garden, a research quality and teaching unit and a wide range of services and partnerships with churches and schools as well as integration with DHB services. “The breadth of elements covered is staggering and the impact on the community must be commensurate with the effort invested by all involved,” were the judges’ comments.

Dr Glenn Doherty was thrilled that his team was recognised for their dedication to their community. He said, “the Board and staff were honoured and privileged to receive the award and is testament to the hard work and performance of those who work for the Society on behalf of the community.  In addition as a Pacific provider it was an outstanding result to show leadership in general practice and primary care.”

The judges also commented that a practice like this, “only comes from much hard work and dedication.”

Tongan Health Society was described by the judges as, “inspirational. The demonstration of collaboration across a wide range of health professionals as well as research and teaching are impressive.”

“The award clearly focussed on continuous improvement and growth and in being proactive and in whatever area there are Tongan community needs.”

The other finalist in the category was Feilding Health Care.
