January 2021 update on potential SARS-CoV-2 vaccines

By Dr Mark Thomas, Associate Professor in Infectious Diseases, University of Auckland

19 January 2021

Dr Mark Thomas has created a video showing how SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, enters human respiratory cells. It also shows how antibody blocks virus entry into human cells, and how COVID-19 vaccines work. Watch the video on YouTube video below.

The 11-minute video narrates a presentation by Dr Thomas that shows the process of virus attachment to ACE2 enzyme, and the subsequent steps that lead to virus entry into the target cells.

The presentation also explains how antibody blocks virus attachment and thus infection, and discusses the differences between the various SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

The presentation does not discuss the “new variant” SARS-CoV-2 strain.
