In its revised model for recertification, MCNZ describes its expectations regarding the new annual conversation component. You can read this part of the MCNZ’s model here (pages 8 and 12).
MCNZ is placing stronger emphasis on planning and evaluating learning. A requirement of the strengthened approach is a:
“structured conversation with a peer, colleague or employer (at least annually)
to discuss outcome data from [learning] activities already undertaken, the doctor’s personal reflection on their practice, learning aspirations, wellbeing, and their career stage and intentions.”
The current approach to CPD asks GPs to include a peer review in their learning plan. By comparison, this new annual conversation is a much more structured and detailed approach to evaluating your learning.
We think that taking time to focus on why a CPD activity was valuable, and what will be done as a result of your learning is important. This activity also promotes working with your peers in a supportive manner, by having conversations around health, wellbeing and career aspirations.
Providing GPs with a strong set of resources to support annual conversations, and being flexible about how and when GPs undertake them, is important to the College.
