Cultural competence, cultural safety and health equity

In its revised model for recertification, MCNZ describes its expectations regarding cultural competence, cultural safety and health equity activities. You can read this part of MCNZ’s model here (pages 8 – 9).

In its new model, MCNZ states:

“Cultural competence, cultural safety and health equity must be embedded within all [CPD activities].”

The MCNZ model also requires GPs to continually develop their ability to practice in a culturally competent and safe manner. It asks them to use data, and work with others to learn about and develop practices that: “lead to improvements in health equity and better health outcomes.”

Doctors could analyse the impact of their own culture, or a patient’s culture, by undertaking CPD activities such as peer review. They could also work with others – such as colleagues, community groups and patients – to identify and address biases, attitudes, assumptions, stereotypes and prejudices to build capacity in this area.
