GPEP employment FAQs

  • What is changing for GPEP Year One registrars?

From February 2027, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (HNZ) will become the direct employer for GPEP Year One registrars who are not employed by a private general practice. This is changing from the College being the employer

  • Will all GPEP 1 registrars now be employed by Health New Zealand?

No. GPEP 1 registrars will continue to have the option of being employed by a private general practice, (practice employed) alongside the option of employment by Health New Zealand. Being practice employed remains an option as a core component of the GPEP training pathway and has not changed.

  • Why is Health New Zealand becoming an employer for GPEP 1 registrars?

The College and Health New Zealand have worked together on this change to provide a smoother transition into GPEP. This aims to remove barriers for doctors entering GP training with the College

  • Will the College still oversee GP training?

Yes. While Health New Zealand will employ registrars who are not employed by a private practice in their first year, the College retains leadership over educational content, training standards, quality assurance, and clinical placements.

  • What does this mean for registrars who want to be practice employed?

Registrars who wish to be employed by a private general practice can continue to do so. This employment option remains unchanged and continues to be an important part of the GP Education Programme (GPEP).

  • Can I change my mind at the time of being awarded a place on the programme on what type of employment I go for?

Yes you will be able to change your mind to either switch from being practice employed to HNZ employed, or vice versa.

  • How does this benefit me as a prospective GPEP registrar?

If you choose Health New Zealand employment, this option may offer:

    • Continued employment within the HNZ system as you enter GPEP
    • A smoother transition from PGY roles into GP training.
  • When can I apply for GPEP if I’m interested?

Applications for the 2027 GPEP intake open:

    • Monday 9 March 2026
    • Close Monday 13 April 2026

You can find further information and apply here.

  • I’m working in general practice under a general scope of practice. If I decide to apply for the GP Education Programme, can I choose to be HNZ-employed (instead of practice-employed)?

Yes, you can choose to be employed by HNZ when you join GPEP or you can stay as being employed directly by a general practice. Find out more.

  • Where can I find more information?

More information about specialising as a GP and applying for GPEP is available here: Specialise as a general practitioner – RNZCGP.
