College employment FAQs
-
How do I change my working hours?
If you need to change your hours from full to part time or need to adjust your working pattern in any way, please complete the Change Request form. If you have any questions prior to submitting the form, please email registrarsupport@rnzcgp.org.nz. We ask you to speak to your placement practice about any changes to your work pattern or hours before submitting a change request. Please provide the College with as much notice as possible to ensure changes can be facilitated.
-
Can I claim TOIL for attending the College conference and other CME conferences?
The College conference is considered CME, so yes, you may claim TOIL for any time spent attending outside normal working hours. You may also claim TOIL for attending a College endorsed conference outside of normal working hours if you are using your CME funding under the CEA to attend. You can find College endorsed events on our events calendar. If you are unsure if a conference is endorsed by the College, please email registrarsupport@rnzcgp.org.nz to confirm eligibility. To attend other conferences, you may apply for study leave or annual leave.
-
Do I need to book leave for travel days to and from exams?
If you are travelling to and from exams on a day you would typically be working, you will need to apply for annual leave or study leave. The day of the examination is considered a working day; therefore, no leave is required to sit your exam. If you sit your exam on a day you do not typically work, you may claim TOIL for that day.
-
I think I am entitled to an allowance or mileage reimbursement – what do I need to do?
If you believe you are eligible for seminar mileage, rural mileage, relocation expense reimbursement, or the rural relocation accommodation allowance, please email RegistrarSupport@rnzcgp.org.nz. You will need to provide proof of current address, and, if applying for a relocation allowance, proof of your previous address. Registrar Support will confirm your eligibility and advise you of the next steps.

Does the College reimburse the cost of textbooks, equipment, MPS or APC renewal?
The College will provide a non-taxable allowance of $2,600 per annum to cover the following programme-related expenses:
- Current practising certificate
- Medical indemnity insurance
- Required textbooks and/or equipment
This allowance will be paid in a lump sum of $1,300 net at the start of each attachment and no invoices or receipts will be required.
-
If I need to renew my ACLS during GPEP year 1, do I need to take leave to attend the course?
No, College employed registrars can count this as CME. If your course is outside of your regular working day, you can claim TOIL.
-
What do I need to do if I am part time and I want to change which days I work?
If you change your work pattern, just like any other change to your employment, you will need to let the College know via the GPEP year 1 Registrar Change Request form. This will ensure that you continue to get paid correctly, and any leave you request is loaded correctly. Any further questions, contact GPEP1Payroll@rnzcgp.org.nz.
-
Will my salary change during GPEP year 1?
Your salary is based on the number of years of post-graduate experience you have as a qualified medical practitioner from the beginning of your contracted period, and under the GPEP year1 CEA your salary is fixed from the beginning of this period for the duration of the 12-months.
-
What happens at the attachment changeover?
You will have been advised prior to the start of the year where you will be for each attachment. The practice has also been advised. You should contact the practice a few weeks before to ensure everything is in place for your arrival. Your exact hours of work may vary between attachments. Practices may have different operating hours, templates and schedules. Please discuss your hours and templates with your second attachment practice in the month prior to starting with them. If you need to change tenths or work patterns (for part-time registrars) please notify the College via the Change Request form.

I'm College employed, and a practice offers me employment for my second attachment. What should I do?
The College strongly discourages practices and registrars from switching to practice employment during the year. A great amount of effort has gone into determining your placements for the year and your Attachment 2 practice is already expecting you and planning for you to join their team. The two placements are designed to offer a variety of experiences, often geographically, and in terms of patient demographics. The College views this as preferable to a single placement. Consider accepting the practice's offer of employment for GPEP year 2 and beyond.
