RNZCGP President steps down

The President of The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, Dr Tim Malloy, announced today that he is stepping down from his role.
“I have made the difficult decision to step down from the Board for health reasons. My resignation will be effective from September 5 when the College Board next meets.”
Dr Malloy said he had made the decision to stand down after experiencing another health set-back.
“I have thought long and hard about how I could continue to meet the demands of my role, but ultimately, the deciding element is to do what is in the best interests of the College,” says Dr Malloy.
“I have never known a time when our sector is not facing challenges. I do know I leave the College in a robust position with a strong operational team, and with the infrastructure necessary to maintain good governance,” he says.
“I hope I have encouraged healthy debate about the future of general practice, complemented by mutual respect amongst health sector professionals.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board, College members and sector leaders for all of the support I have had during my tenure as President.”
College Chief Executive Helen Morgan-Banda says Tim has made a huge contribution to the sector and the College, particularly during the past six years as President.
“Tim has worked tirelessly to ensure New Zealand’s general practice and primary health care services are valued and appropriately resourced. His motivation has always been ensuring patients get the best care possible, and GPs are well supported to deliver this care,” says Helen.
“His knowledge of primary care and strategic vision for the future means he has become a highly respected leader in our sector. He truly embodies the College motto ‘Cum Scientia Caritas’ which translates to ‘with knowledge, compassion’.
“While Tim will continue to be a huge part of the College, we will miss his contribution and guidance in the role of President.”
Dr Malloy will work with the Board, the College Chief Executive and her team, to make the transition to a new President as seamless as possible. The Board is meeting on 5 September, at which time it will make arrangements for filling the role of President.
