Funding cervical screening in general practice welcomed, details critical to successful delivery

The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (the College) welcomes the decision to fund cervical screening in general practice from 1 March 2027 for those aged 25 to 69, removing a cost barrier that can prevent some patients from accessing this important preventative health service.

College Medical Director Dr Prabani Wood says the announcement is a great move to improving access to this vital service and further support New Zealand's goal of eliminating cervical cancer.

"Any initiative that makes it easier to access cervical screening is a positive step. Cost can be a real barrier for some, and removing that barrier should help more people to engage with screening and follow-up care.

"However, cost is only one of the barriers to cervical screening, and we hope this announcement will be supported by measures that help those who face other challenges to accessing care. This includes those who cannot easily attend appointments during standard business hours, who live in rural or remote communities, or who have transport, childcare, cultural or other related barriers."

This announcement reflects the crucial role that general practice plays in delivering cervical screening and supporting equitable access.

"We look forward to seeing the details of how the funding and delivery will work in practice and what support will be available to ensure practices can continue to meet ongoing, and increased, patient need while also managing ongoing workforce pressures," says Dr Wood.

Preventing cervical cancer is one of healthcare's greatest success stories and ensuring screening is accessible through general practice is an investment in better health outcomes for patients and communities.
